Reliable and Essential: A Must-Have for Bushwalkers

I do a bit of bushwalking on my own (mainly vic high country) and always clip my PLB to my belt. I always follow the three simple steps. Check the battery and make sure the unit is working prior to leaving home. Once arrived at hiking location I check the unit is reading a satellite, the process is painfully easy plus you can't put a dollar value on piece of mind. The PLB is simple to operate in an emergency, waterproof, compact, extremely accurate, it's a really robust construction and comes in an almost crushproof case. I also take it when I'm with a group, I figure the more people in the group the higher the chances of someone getting hurt, well that's my theory anyway. Unless you have a satellite phone, any other forms of communications is useless in these remote places. I did a lot of research prior to buying my GME PLB to find it wasn't the cheapest or most expensive, but by far the most popular with bush walking clubs and with industries where their employees work in remote locations. I'd give it 5 stars but fortunately I haven't had to use in an emergency situation as yet, touch wood.

I set off my previous PLB last august when I was walking through the bush alone in outback QLD birdwatching . I tripped and fell and badly broke and dislocated my ankle . I could not get service on my phone so I set off the PLB which one of my sensible sons had given me for my 78 th birthday eleven months prior to that ! Within an hour I had two ambulance people and four firemen . Boy , was I glad to see them . Heading outback prospecting by myself, I figured a good investment would be a PLB after the recent death of prospectors that got lost out of Meekatharra. 'Well I never imagined I would have to use it but I am only writing this because I had to. 'Without the GME PLB I would not be here today. 'I somehow managed to tip my car on to its side in the middle of nowhere on a once in a month a car might go by track. 'My car tipped onto the water fill side and drained all my water as well as not allowing me access to food and fridge . 'With about three days bottled water left and after quite sometime contemplating what I should do the decision was made to press the button. 'I did not want to but I could not get the car back over. Sand desert conditions with zero anchor points and a broken high lift jack. Even with a winch I would not have got out . 'Three hours later I was recoverd by the local police but not before they got bogged to the belly and we had to wait for another tow vehicle to tow the police 4WD out . 'I certainly did not want to take up the police time but as I have said, it would have been a matter of three to four days and I would have perished for certain. I am a Flight Nurse and have been looking for a PLB for my personal use in case of an aviation emergency. The MT610G is a handy size, small enough to carry, big enough to notice if I dropped it and is safely stored in the optional carry case. It is light which is a consideration as we have to be careful how much weight we carry doing emergency retrieval of patients with already heavy medical equipment on board. It fits in my flight suit pants pocket with a lanyard to secure it to my belt loops. The self test is simple and Im reassured by the long battery life and warranty. The activation process also looks simple with good instructions on what to do in the event of an accidental activation. I got a great price during Easter Sales and part of the reason for selecting it is that it doesn't need a monthly subscription, nor does it go through a middleman like Garmin. I have a friend who works in a Search and Rescue outfit and he confirmed this was the best product for me to purchase for my application (covering anywhere from CBD's to regional and remote Australia). The GPS is over and above requirements. I am going to buy my adult children one each for their camping and hiking pursuits.
