Reliable Communication Companion for NZ Great Walks - GME TX6160 Review

Use GME TX6160 majority of my New Zealand Great Walk. We normally hike in big group 10 to 15 people every two years. GME product always part of my emergency kit. Excellent communication tool used in the National Parks and enjoy nature. Strong signal strength even with thick bushes and trees. I cannot imagine going hiking with out GME handheld radio. You can put all the outdoor elements with this unit and it can withstand the NZ outdoors. I wish GME will come up with combo unit of TX6160 with Personal Beacon Locator. My wish list for future release of TX61XX as follows: 1. GPS Capable to transmit location. 2. Better antenna 3. 3000mAH battery 4. OLED LCD with battery saver mode. Carlo Wellington, New Zealand

Disappointing experience with UHF radio charging issue

Had the UHF for 2days, charged it up over night. Failed to charge, reread the instructions and flashing light suggested there was a fault. As per instructions removed the battery and reinstalled several times. Took back to Anaconda to be replaced, Informed me would have to be sent back to GME, and would take 3 weeks.So unable to use on my current trip. 3weeks later still waiting.

I looked at a numbers of CB radios before I purchased this one. It needed to be simple to operate as both myself and my wife would be using it in the car while we were towing the van. It is easy to setup and the dual watch feature is very useful when on the road. GME also have a lot of accessories which can be purchased to suite your future needs so if I want to mount it in the car and have an external aerial, I just need a car kit. The handheld reception is very clear. I have not tried the smaller speaker. I have two 1 Watt units as well, but the 5 Watt capability was needed for travelling in western Queensland, to get the extra distance. While the product is actually made in China, it is designed in Australia, so it is built tough, which was another consideration. I purchased it from Autobarn Bundaberg as it was on sale, plus the salesperson was very knowable on all their CB range which helped with my questions.

Better than average for sure but rubber over buttons wears through quickly ( we own 6 of these and it's a problem for most of them) , would be great if these could be bought as a replaceable part. Waterproofness and general ruggedness is great, it's good to be able to replace the aerial , and very handy to have the torch, has even saved me from having to spend the night out on the odd occasion when the days mustering turned out to be a bit more extreme than expected. I was going to fit a CB radio to our Land Rover for our great escape to the WA Kimberley. A friend suggested a hand held radio and I chose the more powerful 5 Watts TX6160. Notes: - The screw on aerial may need a minor adjustment re "lock in place" serrations when fully screwed down to prevent accidental unwinding if a coat or jacket rubs against aerial. IE: As a traffic controller in twisting, turning or walking motion, a stiff winter jacket can prematurely unwind the aerial when rubbing against the rubber outside surface even though the aerial was initially wound down fully in position.

What can I say, I love it! I bought it (the single pack with the home charger, mic on the full coil cord, ear-piece etc.) from UV 4X4 at Enoggera just over a year ago and it has survived everything I can throw at it ... even leaving it on the roof of my 4WD while I was recovering someone, then spending 30 minutes poking around in the dirt and mud trying to find it when it bounced off my roof when I drove off (have you thought of adding a magnetic area so it can grip a vehicle? Like the QuadLock phone cases have). Then we have how strong the clip is ... stayed clamped onto the support leg of my Rhino bars for over 400kms on the freeway! It's been sat on, bounced around on rough tracks, had a dog steal it (had to chase her for half an hour to get it back as she thought it was a game) ... and it has never missed a beat. It's still works crystal clear, charges up perfectly ... but now has a safe spot (safe from me, to be honest) to sit when I'm not using it, in my new roof console (one day I will get around to grabbing a 'real' one that needs to be installed ... then it won't go through the hell this one has :). I've had a few GME products over the years and cannot recommend this super-tough little hand held highly enough. Very happy! (ps: your system keeps telling me I am in the USA ... but I'm in Brisbane ;)

Reliable GME Radios for Sporting Shooters: Excellent Performance up to 500m!

Having reliable communications is vital in any sport, work or remote location. As sporting shooters we need very good communications out to 500m setting up targets on the range in the least amount of time. Our new GME radios have never let us down. Even after we forgot to put them on charge after months of not being used, they still performed excellently to 500m in line of sight. The handy carry case makes loading and storage compact with good weather protection. These are a better system to use than dedicated mobile phones. Using a GME means hands free, can still use your mobile phone as emergency and incoming calls. Would like to see a 'reflector' on the next model to help find them in the dark when 'misplaced.

GME Handheld Review: Durable Gear with Loud Squelches

Used it on a trip to the Cape. Handheld came with accessories and it all feels like good quality durable gear as I expected from the GME brand and reputation. Unit served its purpose, although it was belting out some pretty load continuos squelches there at stages which was annoying , but this hopefully wasn't the held held issue, probably I'm guessing an interference issue or user issue. :)

I have used the TX6160 handheld 5W unit in a number of scenarios, from reporting back to a vehicle navigating its way through Ngkala rocks on K'gari (Fraser Island), which is essential so you can keep your momentum going in the soft sand, safe in the knowledge that no other vehicles are oncoming. I have also used this device out on the Whitsundays as communication between boats so as to not clog up the VHF boating channels with needless chatter (particularly when in the hands of the kids!). Without exception, this device performs flawlessly with its solid, rugged and weather resistant design and the battery life is brilliant (not to mention the bright, easy to find colours). I have no hesitation in recommending this device.
