GME EPIRB Assists in Curl Curl Rescue

A GME MT600 EPIRB has contributed to the rescue of two people after their vessel sank off Curl Curl on Sydney’s Northern Beaches on the 9th of May, 2020.

Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) Australia responded to the detection of an EPIRB approximately 3.5 nautical miles offshore from Dee Why, Sydney that was registered to a 5-metre runabout known to have two people onboard. Upon receiving the distress alert, JRCC Australia tasked a rescue helicopter and a Sydney Water Police vessel to assist in a rescue effort.

The rescue helicopter was able to quickly locate the two survivors and winched them to safety before returning to shore and landing at Long Reef Surf Life Saving Club  where the two people were then transferred to Hospital by ambulance for treatment of hypothermia symptoms, whilst Sydney Water Police were tasked with organising the recovery of the vessel.

This serves to remind us how important it is to carry an emergency beacon when boating, and ensure that the registration details are up to date before heading out on open waters.

For more information on our range of emergency beacons go to the Emergency Beacons & Safety section.
