PLB Rescue in the Pilbara

A GME Personal Locator Beacon has been used in the rescue of a Swiss woman from Karijini National Park in the Pilbara region of WA on the 8th of January, 2020.

The woman fell and broke her leg whilst hiking through Kalamina Gorge. The woman and her brother activated their MT410G PLB shortly after the incident at approximately 6pm AWST.

The 406MHz signal was detected and transmitted to the JRCC in Canberra, who subsequently notified local emergency services who coordinated the rescue. The injured woman was rescued shortly after by police from Tom Price and Park Rangers who carried her out of the gorge in dark and wet conditions and proceeded to convey her to Tom Price Hospital for treatment where she will begin her recovery.

This once again serves to remind us that PLBs and EPIRBs are crucial pieces of equipment that are needed when hiking or travelling in remote areas.
